Ungifted by Gordon Korman

The book Ungifted by Gordon Korman is about a boy named Donovan Curtis who plays a major prank at his school. When he is about to get punished later, a mess-up occurs, and he lands into ASD (Academy of Scholastic Distinction). ASD is a school that is for the gifted students within the district. Donovan, on the other hand, isn't what you would call "gifted". However, Donovan finds safe refuge in the Academy from the punishment. Despite the fact of being ungifted, he manages to change and play a major role on his school's robotics team. What I learned from this book is that intelligence isn't everything. You need common sense and sometimes even though you don't have any plan or things don't work according to your plan, don't give up, quick thinking may save you. Want to know what happens to Donovan at the school? Read Ungifted to find out.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

The Harry Potter series is one of my favorite series to be enjoyed anytime. I’ve read the books many times, but Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, is my favored book. Each book has more details than the movies and that’s why I prefer it.
“I don’t go looking for trouble, trouble usually finds me.” Harry enunciated and the readers couldn't agree with him more while experiencing J.K Rowling’s third masterpiece ‘Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban’. The book itself is just as exciting and action-packed as the rest of the books in the series. Though I personally think this is the best so far.  I really like that we take a break from the Voldemort plotline, and get a better look at Harry’s parents’ past. The story is amazing.  I love how Rowling takes her readers into the Harry Potter world with the twists and turns, the suspense, the adventure and then side stories about trust and friendship. The plot starts when an infamous prisoner Sirius Black, escapes Azkaban the dreadful prison for wizards and witches. Convicted of killing thirteen people with a single curse, he was said to be the heir apparent to the Dark Lord, Voldemort. He has left two clues as to where he might be headed: Harry Potter’s defeat of You-Know-Who was Black’s downfall as well. And the Azkaban guards heard Black muttering in his sleep, “He’s at Hogwarts…He’s at Hogwarts…!” Harry Potter isn’t safe, not even within the walls of his magical school, surrounded by his excellent teachers, friends and Prof. Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
This book is full of suspense and adventures. First of all, there is the terror and uncertainty of Sirius Black at large throughout the novel – how did he escape? Where is he now? What does he plan to do once he finally gets Harry at Hogwarts? On the other hand, Harry gets snippets of information about why Black is after him in particular, though everything he hears confuses him and readers also. For example, as a precaution, the Ministry of Magic enlists the help of dark, forbidding creatures known as dementors to guard the school.  But, why do the dementors chill Harry to the bone and render him powerless whenever they look at him? In this book, there is less world building and twisty, page turning and very satisfying plot. But, the part I love most about this book is we start to get more back stories about Harry’s parents and what exactly happened to them, a wonderful addition of  Defense Against the Dark Arts Teacher, Lupin who gives Harry some valuable extra coaching. Also, I feel after introduction of the Marauders, Harry gets just a small feeling that Voldemort went after his parents for a specific reason that had to do something with him. The highlight of this book, in my opinion, is the time travel. It is actually carefully mapped out, borderline science fiction. It is brilliant and makes the latter part of the book into suspenseful reading.
I always think the Harry Potter series teaches us a lot about importance of friendship through the bond between Harry, Ron, and Hermione. But their friendship is not presented in rose-colored glasses here. We see fights, personality conflicts, disagreements, and the difficulty of maintaining close friendship with people. But even with this difficulty, the trio always stays together. In the parallel storyline, they save a magical creature, Buckbeak.  The way they stand their ground firmly just shows how the trio is grown up together well. Harry couldn't have solved the mystery without his friends. Plus, we get some extra bang for our buck with this theme in Prisoner of Azkaban since it introduces us to an older generation of buds – the Marauders (James Potter, Sirius, Remus, and Peter). Though this tale of friendship glimpses into their past, I strongly feel it shows how close friendships operate in the adult world and in a time of war. Also, these friendships really play a very important role too in the story’s plot.
Most importantly, this book is a sort of a turning point in Harry’s life where he really begins to grow up. He becomes much more aware of the world around him. As this wizard saga revolves around the themes of betrayal, forgiveness, and suspense, Harry and his friends realize that people and creatures are not often who they appear to be. Those perceptions of enemies and even friends are sometimes misleading. I won’t want to give secrets away, but Professor Lupin turns out to be something more than he appears…!I personally believe that this book is guaranteed to make you read nonstop from beginning to end as you get hooked to strange creatures, astonishing secrets that you can never predict what’s going to happen. I also think that, when reading the Harry Potter series, if you get to Prisoner of Azkaban, you will definitely want to go on to read the rest. It gives you a just touch of what’s to come with the rest of the series.
All in all, the plot and characters are full of mystery and adventures. It stresses the importance of friendship and you will also learn more about the world around you as did Harry. An excellent book with a page-turning plot, Harry’s third year, Harry Potter and Prisoner of Azkaban is a charm. Don’t miss it!

Swindle

"Readers will enjoy the page-turning adventure, the quirky characters and the revenge factor. This book is destined to become a favorite read-aloud for librarians and classroom teachers. It is a must-have for middle school libraries." - Children's Literature. Probably this is the best way you can describe the book 'Swindle' by Gordon Korman.

Plot of the Story: When 6th grader Griffin Bing finds a valuable baseball card and he goes to a shop to sell it. When he gets home he realizes that he has been swindled. The worker who worked there only gave him a fraction of the money it was worth. So Griffin calls some of his friends to steal back the card. And in return they each will split up the money evenly. Now, they have to over smart the swindle. The gang of friends has to overcome an aggressive mean guard dog, state-of-the art military security system and so on. In addition to that the most devastating challenge is they are just 6th graders and cannot DRIVE! Will they be successful or will they give up? To find out read the book. But I have some better news to know about the story; you can watch the movie which will be aired on Nickelodeon Channel. You can find about it HERE.

The 39 Clues: Cahills VS. Vespers

The 39 Clues series are full with danger, excitement, puzzles, and keeps readers on the edge of their seat. This is the second collection of the New York Times bestselling series. It’s my personal favorite as it consists of heart pounding adventures, and cryptic riddles. In this series there are 6 books: The Medusa Plot, A King’s Ransom, The Dead of Night, Shatterproof, Trust No One, and Day of Doom.

The plot of the story: When thirteen year old Dan Cahill and his older sister Amy, thought they could come back and settle down from the clue hunt, but they were wrong. A shadowy organization called the Vespers has kidnapped 7 members of the Cahill family. There is only one way to get them back. The leader of the Vespers, Vesper 1, told Amy and Dan that he would release the hostages if they completed a series of ransoms. These ransoms are no easy tasks. They involve stealing priceless artifacts and finding objects that haven’t been found in years in only a matter of days. What happens if they don’t accomplish the ransom? The failure of one ransom costs a hostage’s life. Will they succeed? Lives are on the line. To find out, don’t miss The 39 Clues: Cahills VS. Vespers.

Masters of Disaster

 disaster2
by Gary Paulsen
"Lets face facts: we  may be the most boring twelve-year olds on the planet."  This is how Henry Mosley delineates their life to his best pals, Reed Hamner and Riley Dollen. Eventually, he convinces them to go on  extreme adventures. This leads them to attempting craziest ideas like riding a bicycle off a roof, camping out alone in the woods, trying to solve a hundred-year old murder, inside a bull riding ring and much more. I'm not going to ruin your hilarious experience by describing all of it. Henry always comes up with the  scariest ideas, Riley researches things , and dreadful Reed has to do Henry's ideas. I hit my funny bone after their mishaps.
I can totally relate to characters and the plot of this book because me and my friends always do crazy stuff. The incidents in the book remind me of our real life disasters. I've read this book multiple times, and every time I find it equally amusing. What I like the most about this book, is that all three friends crack me up a lot. Gary Paulsen brings humor and disaster all in one book. Don't miss this funny ride with mastermind Henry, researcher Riley, and dreadful Reed !

How To Train Your Dragon

Everybody knows about the popular movie that DreamWorks made, How To Train Your Dragon. But did you know it was based on a popular book series?  The How To Train Your Dragon series was written by Cressida Cowell. However, the story for the books is a little more interesting.
Though there is a big difference in the plot of books, there is no war between humans and dragons. Instead, they are friends and allies.
When Hiccup the heir to the Viking tribe catches his first dragon, it's a disappointment. The dragon is very tiny and it is a common dragon. Since the creature has no teeth, Hiccup calls it Toothless. Toothless is extremely hard to train. So Hiccup tries various methods to train his dragon. Like for example, for everything fish Toothless catches Hiccup will tell him a joke because dragons like jokes a lot. Even though Toothless is stubborn, he has saved Hiccup's life multiple times. Hiccup and Toothless have gone many adventures that include villains, new dragons, and his friends helping him on the way. So far my favorite adventure is when Hiccup goes to find Toothless from the evil Romans. His dragon got caught when his ship crashed into a large Roman ship. Along the way Hiccup gets a new friend.
To find about his adventures read the How To Train Your Dragon series!

The Worst Case Scenario: Deadly Seas, You Decide How To Survive!

The Worst Case Scenario series gives the reader a different reading experience, instead of reading the book from beginning to end, there are choices in the book which have multiple options and you must choose the right one or you might go to the wrong ending.

In the Deadly Seas book by David Borgenicht and Alexander Lurie with Mike Perham, sailing consultant, you are the youngest group to sail across the whole world! You encounter real sailing problems, such as health issues, wildlife, and storms. There are total 33 endings those leads you to wrong path, but there is only one ending to ultimate success! This book was really confusing ( making the right choices) for me. So many times I went to the wrong ending, but this made me more ambitious to find out the successful ending. I was so desperate to see "Congratulations! You have achieved... THE ULTIMATE SUCCESS."
and I finally did it !!! It was totally an adventurous journey.
There are other books in the series like Amazon, Everest, and Mars. I will write about these books soon.

Steve Jobs : American Genius

Steve Jobs
Steve Jobs is the co-founder of the the world's #1 most admired company, Apple. I first came across Steve Jobs, when my mom showed me his Stanford University speech. His speech was amazing and at the same time inspiring.
So I decided to do some research about him and I came across this book, Steve Jobs: American Genius by Amanda Ziller. In this biography, the author explains Steve Jobs' life in chronological order, his achievements, what inspired him, his friends, and his difficulties.
Here are some events I like about the book:
  • Apple actually started in a garage!
  • Steve Jobs wasn't the only one who started Apple, Steve Wozniak and Mike Markkula also helped with creation of Apple.
  • Before Jobs created Apple, he worked for the first video gaming company, Atari.
  • When Jobs wanted to travel to India, he actually had to travel to Germany first, because the person who hired him, Al Alcorn, explained that if he went to Germany and fixed the Germans gaming problems, Jobs could go to India because  the airfare from Germany to India would be cheaper.
  • Jobs created Pixar Animation Studios, the first studio to create a computer animated movie, Toy Story.

After I read this book, I realized that Jobs' journey wasn't easy. Even though things didn't go his way, he still didn't give up. This is what is so inspiring about Steve Jobs.
